Scripture

The King in his might loves justice. You have established equity;

you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.(Psalm 99:4, ESV)

Thoughts

First, how do we know which king the psalmist is talking about here? We can find out by reading the first three verses.

The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble!

He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!

The Lord is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples.

Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he!(Psalm 99:1-3)

This king is the King of Kings! And what does he love “in his might?” He loves justice. Is justice simply fairness? This is what we often think, but let’s look at the definitions of fairand just.

Just: based on or behaving according to what is morally right and fair.

Fair: in accordance with the rules or standards; legitimate.

As humans, we tend to believe that God is just but that weare the ones who know what is fair. No, the truth is that God is both just and fair. When we limit God to justice and say that people get to define what is fair, we are playing God and we’ll always end up at the wrong place. God sees perfectly, so his view of justice and fairness is trustworthy. He always follows the beneficial rules he established in this world.

Sometimes the wickedness and suffering in this world cause us to think that God has forgotten about fairness. But I want to remind you that God loves justice and that encompasses fairness. In this Psalm, we see that our appropriate response to God’s greatness is to give him praise.

Application

In your relationship with God, how do you see him? Is he your buddy or your king? He lovingly invites us to go to his throne confidently and find grace (Heb. 4:16). At the same time, it isa throne! Our Lord is a holy, reigning, great, and awesome God. Because he loves justice, you can trust whatever he does. It is always right.

Prayer

Lord, you are God. You are Holy. You are great. Lord, I praise you. You reign over my life.… (Continue praying.)
