Peacemaker Ministries Devotional: God Replenishes

Written by P. Brian Noble | Oct 22, 2019 6:01:00 AM

Scripture

For I will satisfy the weary soul,

and every languishing soul I will replenish.

For I satisfy the weary ones

and refresh everyone who languishes (Jeremiah 31:25, NASB)

Thoughts

Does the “everyone” in this verse include you? “For I … refresh everyone who languishes.” In this passage, God is talking about his people in Judah; at the same time, he is talking about you and me. When our souls languish, God replenishes. When we are weary, he satisfies. Now that is encouraging.

There is something interesting in this Psalm:

For he satisfies the longing soul,

and the hungry soul he fills with good things. (Psalm 107:9, ESV)

The Hebrew word for fills is the same word as replenishes in the Jeremiah verse. It is the word mālēʾ, which means to fill or make complete. God is the one who will fill your life and make it complete.

During his Sermon on the Mount, one of the things Jesus promised was, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied” (Matthew 5:6, ESV). We are all actually hungry and thirsty in this way—let’s turn to Jesus so he can satisfy our longings.

Application

What or who satisfies you? What or who completes your life and replenishes you? Paul answers these questions in Colossians 2: “For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled [made complete] in him, who is the head of all rule and authority” (Colossians 2:9-10, ESV). Remember that nothing else will complete you like Jesus will. For instance, you cannot find completeness in another person’s approval. You will only be completely satisfied if you go to Jesus with your inner hunger or thirst. He wants to satisfy your longing soul and fill your hungry emotions, desires, and thoughts with himself.

Prayer

Lord, I choose today to find my satisfaction only in you. You are the only one who will fill me up. Help me to turn away from other things that only satisfy temporarily, and reach out to you, the only one who can make me complete.… Continue praying.
