Peacemaker Ministries Devotional: The Helper

Scripture

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” (Genesis 2:18, ESV)

Thoughts

Here we read, “The Lord God said….” This is God himself speaking: the King of the Universe and the One who created us. He says that it isn’t good for humans to be alone; we were created for relationship. We were created to be close to others. Often single people who want to be with someone, to have help with life, end up choosing to do many things on their own after they marry. In the same way, too many people who are following Christ somehow try to do the Christian walk on their own.

In this part of Genesis, the topic is Adam and Eve and marriage, but there is a significant parallel for all believers: the Helper whom God has sent to believers today. God has made sure that you don’t have to be alone relationally or spiritually. As Jesus explained to his disciples, "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you." (John 14:16–17, ESV)

The Helper is with us forever. Spouses will pass away and friends may abandon us, but the Holy Spirit is our forever Helper. As Jesus said in John 14, the Helper lives in you. And as Paul wrote, the Spirit prays for us (see Romans 8:26-27). Be encouraged that God has provided for us so perfectly.

Application

Whether you are single or married, whether you have many friends or just a few, are you trying to live your Christian walk on your own? Are you trying to do things in your own strength? Please listen: God did not abandon us after redeeming us through Jesus. He has given his Spirit to each child of God. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives inside you with all his power (see Ephesians 1:16-17).

Prayer

Lord, help me to have a new awareness that I am not doing life alone. I want to live humbly and gratefully, relying on the One who lives in me….
