Scripture

Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory,

for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!

Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”

Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.

Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands.

(Psalm 115:1–4, ESV)

Thoughts

Where is their God?” Have you asked, “God, where are you?” This psalm reassures you that our Lord is in heaven and does all that he pleases; he is faithful and loving. We are living to give glory to him

“The nations” are worshiping idols that cannot talk, cannot smell, cannot feel, and cannot walk. That is our natural pattern also: trusting things and people to give our lives meaning and happiness. But that always disappoints us! Our trust doesn’t need to be in idols; we can put our trust in the Lord. He helps us and is a shield to us. Remember that he wants to bless you; he is always at work to bring about his good purposes in you. The heavens are the Lord’s, so let’s take a stand and praise the Lord. Let’s rise up and bless the living God.

Application

At times in our relationships, we do say in our hearts, “God, where are you?” I want to encourage you to put your trust in God like the psalmist did. We know exactly where the Lord is—in heaven. He hasn’t deserted you, and he is worthy of your praise despite your circumstances. So decide to get up and praise him, not for what he has or has not done, but for who he is. It will change your view of your conflict. It will change your mind. It will transform you to praise in the midst of your storm.

Prayer

Lord, to be honest, I do have idols, and they don’t satisfy me. Please forgive me and help me to clear off the throne in my heart. I want to really trust in you. Thank you for your constant love and faithfulness. You are worthy of all my praise and trust. You are wonderful, and you are… (Continue praying.)
