Peacemaker Ministries Devotional: In God I Trust

by P. Brian Noble / March 30, 2020

Scripture

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.

In God, whose word I praise,

   in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.

What can flesh do to me? (Psalm 56:3-4, ESV)

Thoughts

When you’re afraid, where do you put your trust? David trusts in God, not in his own strength. What is going on in his life that he needs to put his trust in God? Look at the first two verses of Psalm 56:

Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me;

   all day long an attacker oppresses me;

my enemies trample on me all day long,

   for many attack me proudly. (Psalm 56:1–2, ESV)

David is trampled down, attacked, and oppressed. We’ve all experienced some of this ourselves, and we’ve seen it done to others. We may even have done it to someone else. The key isn’t whether we will be impacted by someone else’s fallenness, but where we put our trust when we do get trampled.

Look what David does: he brings up God’s Word which is full of promises. We can also hang onto God’s Word through the twists and turns of life. We need God’s promises! Do you have a Scripture that jumps out to you and ministers to you in your time of need? Hold onto it and stand firm, trusting in God and his Word.

Application

In your current relationships, are you ever afraid? What is your first response? Where do you place your trust? Today is a day you can believe God’s promises and trust him. This is a promise that I always hang onto:

For you shall not go out in haste, and you shall not go in flight,

   for the Lord will go before you, and the God of Israel will be your rear guard.  (Isaiah 52:12, ESV

Prayer

God, I do trust you and believe in your promises, and I want to trust you more. I confess that I am fearful, and I stand on the fact that you go before me and behind me…. Continue praying.
