Servant Leadership

Be free from pride-filled opinions, for they will only harm your cherished unity. Don’t allow self-promotion to hide in your hearts, but in authentic humility put others first and view others as more important than yourselves. Abandon every display of selfishness. Possess a greater concern for what matters to others instead of your own interests. (Philippians 2:3-4, The Passion Translation)

No matter what the culture looks like, as followers of Jesus we have the ultimate example of leadership: Jesus, the King who washed his disciples feet.

Think about that for a minute. The One who created the entire universe humbled himself to the point of servanthood (Phil. 2:7) and lovingly cared for those around him.  We can learn a lot from JesusThe temptations facing us today in the political sphere may include defending a position or standing for what we insist is “right.” However, Jesus counters our ideology with a radical twist—servant leadership.  In the gospels we see him living differently than everyone around him, yet thousands flocked to hear what he had to say.

Servant Leadership

Paul wrote to the Philippians to remind them that in Christ they are to be “free from pride-filled opinions.” This instruction is true for us as well, so when we choose to follow this truth we position ourselves to walk like Jesus. The gospels are filled with examples of Jesus being confronted by the Pharisees, who were right in their own eyes. Paul is familiar with the dangers of doing this, and he warns us against self-promotion, which distorts our perspective.

What would it look like if we chose authentic humility and put others first? What if we showed them that we sincerely care about what concerns them? From this posture, we discover that being right isn’t usually the right course of action to take. The heart of another person has greater value than our cherished viewpoint.

Pride-filled opinions will harm our relationships.  When we choose to think with a Kingdom mindset, we are open to considering how Jesus might want us to serve our family members, co-workers, church friends and neighbors.  In serving, we reflect his nature toward those around us; we walk as Jesus walked and strengthen the body of Christ.

Servant leadership is love lived out.
