Peacemaker Ministries Devotional: Pardon Our Sin

by P. Brian Noble / April 10, 2020

Scripture

Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance?

He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love.

He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot.

You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. (Micah 7:18-19, ESV)

Thoughts

Who is like God? God is the one who pardons our sin. He looks at believers and passes over their sin. Do you remember the story in the Old Testament about Moses and God’s people in Egypt? The Lord told his people:

Take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. None of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning. For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians, and when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you. (Exodus 12:22-23, ESV

Instead of holding onto his anger forever, God delights in steadfast love. He looks at you through the blood of his Son Jesus; this reveals the compassion of the Heavenly Father. Micah says he takes those sins we have been carrying around and puts them under his feet. God tromps on our sins! Then he throws our sins into the depths of the sea.

Application

According to Jesus, the gospel is a daily gospel.

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23, ESV

We are to apply the gospel daily. Not for the purpose of salvation—we are saved once and for all through Jesus Christ—but for our sanctification, to make us holy and to set us apart for him. Simply put, we apply the good news of the Cross every day so that we live humbly before God and others. How have you applied Jesus’ sacrifice to your doorpost today? How have you applied the gospel in your broken relationships? Is it time to remember to take the other person and your own sin to the Cross and remind your heart that Jesus died for both of you?

Prayer

Lord, help me always to remember that you paid at the Cross for the sins done to me and the sins I do to others. I want my life to show that you have crushed my sin and thrown it into the depths of the sea…. Continue praying.
